Natural Disaster... Winter Storms, Before, During and After Checklist!
The last thing you want is to undergo a natural disaster, but when something does happen it’s best to have all of your ducks in a row.
We put together a safety list (along with a downloadable pdf) to keep you and your home protected!
The best natural disaster is one that never happens. Let’s make sure you are prepared.
Before the Storm
How you should prep
1. Assembling an emergency preparedness kit.

2. Creating a household evacuation plan that includes your pets.

3. Staying informed about your community’s risk and response plans.

4. Tuning into the local and NOAA radio for storm updates

5. Protecting your home
Make sure your home is properly insulated. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windowsills to keep cold air out. Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside to provide an extra layer of insulation to keep cold air out.

During the Storm
At a Glance
1. Staying Safe During a Winter Storm or Blizzard
Stay indoors and wear warm clothes. Layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing will keep you warmer than a bulky sweater. If you feel too warm, remove layers to avoid sweating; if you feel chilled, add layers.

2. Staying Safe Outside (if you must go out)
Wear layered clothing, mittens or gloves, and a hat. Outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. Mittens or gloves and a hat will prevent the loss of body heat.

3. Driving in Winter Conditions
Check your vehicle emergency supplies kit and replenish it if necessary

3. If you become stranded
Stay in the vehicle and wait for help. Do not leave the vehicle to search for assistance unless help is visible within 100 yards (91 meters). You can quickly become disoriented and confused in blowing snow.

After the Storm
At a Glance
1. Continue listening to local news or NOAA Weather Radio
Stay updated on the current situation as much as you can.

2. Identifying & Treating Frostbite and Hypothermia
Frostbite and hypothermia are cold-related emergencies that may quickly become life or limb threatening.
